Private Classes & Studio Rentals
Ox-Bow is glad to offer independent studio rentals and private instruction on a limited basis! Tailor-make your experience in our Ceramics, Glass, Metals, or Print Studio. Whether you are an experienced practitioner or a first-timer, we can meet your facility needs. Work with us to design a small private class for you and your crew, or plan some solo work time in one of our specialized shops.
What does a private class look like? Private classes can be groups of 2–6 adults learning introductory or advanced making techniques! Classes can be as short as three hours or as long as three days, depending on the scope of your schedule and what you wish to accomplish.

Our studios
THE BURKE GLASS STUDIO
Primarily an open-air glassblowing facility, the Glass Studio also features a cold-working annex for glass bead-making and cast glasswork. Daily access to our hot shop includes full studio access, use of a top-loading annealer, 50 pounds of clear glass and use of our tools.
Cold shop access includes the use of our sandblaster (220 grit), plaster/silica mold making, casting and flame-working.
GLASS STUDIO - HOT SHOP
Base day rate: $450
This level includes the support of one glass assistant who can provide hands-on support to a glassblower with advanced-level previous experience. At this level of rental, the glass assistant will not provide instruction on glass processes.
Mentorship level day rate: $600
This level includes the support of one glass technician who can provide hands-on guidance to a glassblower with mid-level previous experience. The technician can provide instruction on glass processes as pre-determined in conversation before the time of the rental.
Materials/access included: rate includes full shop access, top-loading annealer, 50 lbs. of clear glass, access to shop tools, cold shop access
Additional glass will be purchasable for $100/50 lb box.
GLASS STUDIO - COLD SHOP
Base day rate: $100
This level includes an orientation to the shop by our glass studio manager, as well as limited access to them to ask shop-specific questions. This level is appropriate for an experienced cold worker who is looking to work independently, not learn new processes.
Mentorship level day rate: $250
This level includes the support of one glass technician who can provide hands-on guidance to a glass worker with mid-level previous experience. The technician can provide instruction on cold working processes as pre-determined in conversation before the time of the rental.
Materials/access included: cold shop equipment, sandblaster (220 grit), plaster/silica mold making and casting and flame-working.
Materials such as casting crystal, extra flameworking color, extra plaster/silica, will have to be provided by the participant. Firing available for an additional fee; inquire if interested.
WORKS ON PAPER STUDIO
The print studio, located on the first floor of our Works on Paper building, houses lithography, collograph, etching, screenprinting, woodcut and letterpress facilities. Your daily lab fee for print studio access includes ink, emulsions and newsprint. Plan to bring your own paper or consult with us about your paper needs.
Base day rate: $75
This level includes an orientation to the shop by our print studio manager, as well as limited access to them to ask shop-specific questions. This level is appropriate for an experienced printmaker who is looking to work independently, not learn new processes.
Mentorship level day rate: $200
This level includes the support of one print technician who can provide hands-on guidance to a printmaker with some previous experience. The technician can provide instruction on print processes as pre-determined in conversation before the time of the rental.
Materials/Access Included: Your day rate (at either level) includes access to printing presses, tools, inks and newsprint. You will provide your own paper.
KREHBIEL CERAMICS STUDIO
Our Ceramics Studio features ample space and equipment for hand-building and wheel-throwing as well as a stocked glaze lab. Use of these facilities and our electric kilns is included in your daily studio rate, as well as up to 50 pounds of clay. Additional clay and use of our gas-fired car kiln are available for an additional fee.
Base day rate: $75
This level includes an orientation to the shop by our ceramics studio manager, as well as limited access to them to ask shop-specific questions. This level is appropriate for an experienced ceramicist who is looking to work independently, not learn new processes.
Mentorship level day rate: $200
This level includes the support of one ceramics technician who can provide hands-on guidance to a ceramicist with some previous experience. The technician can provide instruction on ceramics processes as pre-determined in conversation before the time of the rental.
Materials/Access Included: up to 25 lbs of clay per day, a variety of glazes, and electric kiln firing
*Access to gas kiln firing available for an additional fee, please inquire if interested.
PADNOS METALS STUDIO
The Metals Studio is a spacious open-air facility, housing equipment for welding, jewelry-making, and other metal fabrication. Woodworking, mold-making and additional 3D processes are also right at home in this space. We can work with you to order the materials you need ahead of time (not included in your daily lab fee) so you are ready to work upon arrival.
Base day rate: $75
This level includes an orientation to the shop by our metals studio manager, as well as limited access to them to ask shop-specific questions. This level is appropriate for an experienced metals worker who is looking to work independently, not learn new processes.
Mentorship level day rate: $200
This level includes the support of one metals technician who can provide hands-on guidance to a metals worker with some previous experience. The technician can provide instruction on ceramics processes as pre-determined in conversation before the time of the rental.
Materials/access included: Your rental includes access to MIG welders and other tools for metal and woodworking, mold-making and additional 3D processes. We can work with you to order the materials you need ahead of time (not included in your daily lab fee) so you are ready to work upon arrival.
NEED SOME PRIVATE STUDIO SPACE?
Need a simple space enclosed by four white walls where you can dig into your practice? We’ve got you covered. Rent one of our private studios in the Convent and have a room of your own, modestly equipped with a work table, chairs and plenty of space to innovate!
Private Group Classes
Looking for a more in-depth learning experience in one of our studios? Work with us to custom-design a private class for you and several of your closest friends! We offer private classes for groups of 2-6 people in our glass, print, ceramics and metals studios. Your 3-day long private class experience will include lunch daily and a celebratory wine and cheese send-off on the last day.
EXAMPLES OF A PRIVATE CLASS
First-Time Glassblowing: Get acquainted with life in the hot shop! Learn to gather, roll, and blow molten glass. Create a paperweight and even a drinking glass.
Advanced Glassblowing Techniques: Our studio staff can help take your glasswork to the next level! Learn to work larger, create footed vessels, or explore the use of color.
Weld in Our Metals Studio: Learn to use a MIG welder and walk away from class with a finished (and even functional!) steel sculpture.
Printmaking Intensive: Pick a print process to delve into! Learn the ins and outs of lithography, monotype, screenprinting, or even textile dyeing.
Basic Ceramics Immersion: Learn a variety of handbuilding techniques to create art objects and vessels.
Ceramics Studio Glaze Lab: Provide your own greenware and explore glazing methods.
